This is an amazing book. Yes, it is a "children's" book, but, I think people of any age can learn from it and cry about it.

Nov 09, Margarita Cruz rated it it was amazing. Well in the novel, Max the Mighty, the sequel to Freak the Mighty, by Rodman Philbrick, many crazy things like this happen. The genre of this book is young adult fiction or realistic fiction.

I think Max the Mighty was a great book but, I believe that to be able to understand it, you should certainly read Freak the Mighty first. Max the Mighty takes place in different places, over several days. Then, to a highway. And lastly, to a coal mine. At his school he meets a girl whose name is Rachel and goes by the nickname, Worm. Worm and Max become like best friends. Worm has a conflict with her step dad, causing her to runaway with Max. On their way there they happen to find a retired school teacher, whose name is Dip, willing to take them there.

On their way, they find 2 more people and take them along. Before they got to Montana they had to catch another ride. So they got there by train. There, they see her dad is dead. Then the police arrives with her stepdad. There, he confesses the truth and the police arrests him. I believe the major theme of this novel is trust and self-reliance. Throughout the story, Max and Worm have to trust many people including themselves.

Worm trusted Max to take good care of her and to take her to Chivalry, where her dad was. As you can see, they also trusted Dip to take them to Chivalry. Additionally, Max and Worm had to rely on themselves to get to Chivalry. With trust and self reliance, they were able to get to Chivalry safely. Max thinks of himself as worthless and helpless. Until he meets Worm. After having a whole adventure with her, he feels great to be able to help her.

At the end, Max feels strong again as he felt with Kevin. Which is what like about Max, that even though he thought of himself as useless, he stayed strong throughout the story. I really liked this book. It taught me many stuff, like trust, self reliance, staying strong, and believing in yourself.

My favorite part was when everything went back to normal and everyone was happy. I can relate to Max because sometimes people can feel sad or useless but never give up. Always stay strong even through most difficult situations. I really do recommend this book to people of all ages. It is a great book but as I said to understand it, you should read Freak the Mighty first. I give this book a 5 out of 5.

Feb 28, Alma Gonzalez rated it really liked it. This story is about losing someone who had a big role in your life. If you've lost someone who who cared about very deeply then this is a book you should read, written by Rodman Philbrick. This is a great novel. In this story you will meet Max which gets teased for being tall and looking like his dad and for not being smart.

Max gets bullied for looking like his felon of a father. Max's only friend had died so he was left with no one. Max went and tried to help the girl and the kids left and the girls name was Worm. One day while Max was passing by Worm's house he heard and saw thru the window of Worm's house her mom and stepdad were discussing and the undertaker starts hitting Worm's mother and she's was crying and Worm was just reading with her miners hat.

The undertaker opens the door and sees Max but Worm's mother tells Max to take her so he does and they go hide. The undertaker goes to Max's house with the police and acts as if he didn't do anything.

Then they went on an adventure to find Worm's father for help. The theme of story is friendship and respect. In the story it shows a lot true friendship and honesty. For example, when the Max goes to save Worm from the undertaker before he does anything to harm her.

It shows that Worm's mom trusted in Max even though she doesn't really know him. Also Worm trusted Max with her own safety. While the police were on the hunt for Max and the Worm because the undertaker lied to the police he said Max took away Worm. The novel Max has to go through difficult measures to try to get to Worm's father. My favorite part of the story is when they Max and Worm find where Worm's father passed away because he was a miner and him and other men passed away as well.

Another part I think is sad about this book is towards the end was when the miners building the rest of it and it's about to fall then Worm runs in a whole and Max follows her thinking that she's going to let herself fall down but she doesn't Max and Worm pray in that hole.

I do think people should read this novel. This is one of the best books I have ever read. Nov 24, Alondra Diaz rated it it was amazing. Have you ever been bullied or teased of how you look? Well this story is about have you ever lost someone and now you're left with know one?

There friends help them and took them too the places they needed to go to find Worms dad. The novel Max have to go threw hard passages to try to get to Worms dad in the story. My favorite part of the story is when they Max and Worm find where Worms dad died because he was a miner and him and other men died when the building fell. Another part I think is sad about this book is towards the end was when the miners building the rest of it is about to fall that Worm runs in where this whole is and Max follows her he thinks she's going to let herself fall down but no Max and Worm pray in that hole where her dad and other works might be and after they pray for her dad she lets the hat that she has as a memory from her dad and Max and Worm watch the hat disappear.

In some parts of the story are sad so it might lead to tears. I think that anyone could read this book mostly if you're into adventure. I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars.

    Freak the Mighty

Apr 16, Josiah rated it it was amazing. I could hardly imagine a sequel even being in the same ballpark as Freak the Mighty , but this book was all that and more.

Rodman Philbrick is a brilliant writer, taking the reader on more twists and turns than I could ever have imagined. The characters in Max the Mighty are as sharply realized as any in all of literature, and the pacing remains consistently of a superior quality throughout the entire book. It mystifies me that Rodman Philbrick has never won a Newbery Medal.

I love this story; no I could hardly imagine a sequel even being in the same ballpark as Freak the Mighty , but this book was all that and more. I love this story; not quite as much as Freak the Mighty , but to even be in the discussion means that this book affected me profoundly, and left an indelible and totally original impression in my mind. I would recommend this story of so much depth to anyone.

Max the mighty is a very good book and I think some others should read it. Feb 12, Brendan rated it it was amazing. It was completely action packed this time plus a little humor. One of the best parts about this book is you never know what is going to happen next. She lives a bad life with the worst step father you could ever dream of.

It was her original fathers. Max originally met Worm after saving her from gang bangers which stole her book. Then the next day he saw her again at the park, after she ran away from home right when the undertaker came to pick her up Worm gave Max a book to read. She also gave him the address to return it. She told Max to keep Worm safe, he ran out which is when the goose chase began.

Max and Worm hitch-hiked while trying to stay away from police. A man named Dip picked them up. He was a retired school teacher who wanted to travel the world on a bus with his wife. Sadly his wife passed away right before they started. Now Dip had some company for his journey this is where you open up the book. View all 6 comments. Mar 26, Jason rated it it was ok.

Max the Mighty is the mostly disappointing sequel to the highly acclaimed Freak the Mighty. The leave-your-sense-of-reality-at-the-door plot involves Max going on a cross country adventure with a bookwormish eleven-year-old girl.

The magic of Freak the Might is the way in which everyday situations are turned into adventures; the novel's action is firmly based in realistic situations. In contrast, Max the Mighty's over the top plot strains the reader's patience.

Although the ending of Max the Mig Max the Mighty is the mostly disappointing sequel to the highly acclaimed Freak the Mighty. Although the ending of Max the Mighty is touching, overall the novel lacks the heart of its predecessor. The final twenty pages cannot make up for pages of banality.

Also, the main villain is named The Undertaker. Dec 07, Kendall rated it really liked it Recommends it for: Easy readers, adventure cravers. This is the sequel to the book by the same author, Freak the Mighty.

I didn't really care for Freak the Mighty that much, but this has made some improvements. The organization of the paragraphs has been better used even though the storyline is of the same theme. One thing I also liked about this is the wild, imaginative adventure it containes. It reminds me of adventures I used to think of happening when I was a young child. I sensed the heroism and chemistry between Max and Worm Rachel and knew that they'd make a great couple not implying romantically.

Sure, Freak and Max were cool buddies, but Worm and Max are forever loved. Jun 27, Mara Vetters rated it it was amazing Shelves: This is a remarkable book that I may have loved even more than Freak the Mighty.

Max the Mighty contains many of the same elements, such as odd friendships and children dealing with adult problems, but it is far from a rehash of the last book. Instead Max the Mighty shows Max in a new role of protector which he is growing into, continuing the character development as he tries to help a new friend out of a painfully familiar situation.

Part Maniac Magee, part On the Road, Max the Mighty is an all around remarkable book that combines the whimsy of childish imagination with the darkness and the heroism that children have to face growing up in a real and imperfect world.

Jan 21, Deanna Mlynarczyk rated it really liked it Shelves: Kevin has Morquio syndrome , wears leg braces and uses crutches, and thinks of himself as a robot and is bullied by many bigger kids due to his short height.

However, Max likes Kevin and thinks the crutches and leg braces are neat. Many years later, when Max is in middle school, he finds out that Freak and his mother, Gwen referred to as "The Fair Guinevere" are moving into the house next door. When Max initially approaches Freak, Freak acts with hostility.

However, some time later, Max saves Kevin's toy ornithopter from a tree and they start to become friends. On the Fourth of July, they go to see the fireworks show and are attacked by an older boy, Tony "Blade" D. After the show, Blade chases the two with his gang after Freak calls him a cretin.

Despite Max's lack of knowledge and disability, he escapes by acting on Freak's orders, but the two are driven into a muddy millpond , Freak riding on Max's shoulders. Freak gets the attention of a nearby police car, who drives off Blade's gang and takes the boys home.

After this incident, Kevin starts riding on Max's shoulders regularly. They begin to call themselves "Freak the Mighty". They go on adventures such as going to the hospital which Freak claims has a secret department called the "Bionics Department" which has had his brain CT scanned to be fitted into a bionic body.

On one adventure they find a woman's purse in the storm drain. They return it to the woman who is named Loretta Lee. She is the wife of Iggy Lee, leader of the Panheads, a motorcycle gang who "struck fear in everyone, even the cops", as Max puts it.

Iggy says that the two of them once knew Max's father. They consider "having some fun" with the boys but don't because they are afraid that Max's father will get parole even though he's serving a life sentence. They also reveal that Kevin's father left once he heard that his son had a birth defect. Freak has an emergency at school and is taken to the hospital. Later, Grim reveals to Max that his father has been released from prison on parole.

Throughout the story, it has been gradually revealed that Max's father killed his mother by strangling her, and that Grim and Gram dislike his father and are afraid of Max ending up like him. Grim threatens to download a gun for the family's protection. Max is shocked and scared by the news of his father's parole. On Christmas Eve, Max is woken up by his father, Killer Kane, who has come to take him to train him to be his assistant.

After Max is kidnapped by his father, the two walk to Iggy Lee's apartment in the Testaments. Killer Kane is even bigger than Max and acts in a very threatening, intimidating manner towards everyone, including his son, whom he keeps tied up on a small chair. Killer Kane swears that he did not murder Max's mother and calls himself "a man of God".

On Christmas morning he leaves Max alone, tied up in a room in an old abandoned apartment. Loretta, shocked that Kane would do something like that to his own child, tries to help him escape. Killer Kane catches her and starts to strangle her.

He begins but is interrupted by Max. Max tries to get up and rips off the rope to which the old boiler has been attached. Max attempts to stop him and reveals that he witnessed his father kill his mother in the same fashion. Kane lets go of Loretta, letting her lie on the ground breathing like a "broken bird" and gives up on training Max to be his obedient assistant so he tries to murder him by strangling him, like he did to Max's mother, but Freak arrives just in time and saves Max by squirting Kane with a squirt gun in the eye which he claims is filled with sulfuric acid when in fact, as Freak reveals later, it is filled with soap , vinegar , and curry powder.

The police are waiting outside, and Killer Kane is taken back to prison and has to serve his original sentence plus ten years. Killer Kane pleads guilty. After having a seizure on his birthday, Freak is admitted into the hospital, where he gives Max a blank book, telling him to write the story of Freak the Mighty in it. Max returns to the hospital the next day to find that Freak died because his heart became too big for his body.
